NOTE: Animation classes receive Fine Art and Practical Art credits.
Animation I (BHS) (1 yr., Grades 9-12)
Prerequisite: Art Structure I completion or concurrent enrollment highly recommended.
Animation I provides experiences in traditional and contemporary techniques for designing and creating the illusion of movement. Drawing experience or completion of Art Structure I is highly recommended as exercises and projects are heavily drawing-focused. Students will learn to design characters, backgrounds and graphic images, sequence original concepts on storyboards, utilize sound, and create original animated shorts using a variety of methods and software. The curriculum includes the study of the animation process, the 12 principles of animation, criteria for analyzing and interpreting animated images, survey of animation history, overview of careers in the field of Animation, and development of personal concepts and artistic skills. This class culminates in the development of a resume and portfolio of successful artworks.
Animation 2: Advanced Animation (BHS) (1 yr., Grades 10-12)
Prerequisite: Animation I with minimum grade of B
Advanced Animation builds on Animation I experiences in traditional and contemporary techniques for designing and creating the illusion of movement, plus a focused independent project each semester based on student interest in career specific areas, methods and software. Emphasis is placed on developing original concepts and artistic skills to build a strong and perse portfolio that reflects the development of a personal artistic style. Students will initiate and visualize ideas for sophisticated animated shorts, illustrate concepts for an animated series, game or comic, and create original characters and imagery to clearly convey story or message. This class culminates in digital portfolio of both concept layouts and animation examples.
Animation 3: Entertainment Design (BHS) (1 yr., Grades 11-12)
Prerequisite: Animation 2 with minimum grade of B
Animation 3 builds on Animation 2 fundamentals in character and concept development and the illusion of movement, with a focus toward digital content creation for entertainment. Students will develop and plan out ideas, and explore digital applications that will enable them to visualize and/or animate their concepts. Students will learn professional software, including an introduction to 3D modeling, to create props, environments, characters and effects, and animation sequences. Students will explore game concepts and player interaction, and practice presentation layouts that visualize and communicate their ideas. This class culminates in a demo reel showing a range of artistic and digital skills, plus a career-focused area of development.
Digital Art/Video Production 1, Grade 9-12
Prerequisites: None
Utilizing a variety of teaching strategies, this course introduces students to the history of motion pictures. It provides them with an understanding of a variety of cinematic techniques, and offers them opportunities to write, discuss, and apply to original video projects, the knowledge and techniques gained. Through lecture, reading, discussion, and analysis of professional examples, students learn the elements of cinema and gain an understanding of American culture. Using digital video camcorders and audio/video editing software, students create original video projects in a number of genres (e.g., public service announcements, documentaries, and feature short films). Students critique their work using appropriate cinematic and art vocabulary.
Digital Art II, Grade 9-12
Prerequisites: Digital Art/Video Production 1
Furthering their study of American culture through cinema, this course focuses on particular cinematic genres. Students learn to express their ideas cinematically through a variety of film projects, including silent features, music montages, documentary films, and feature short films. This course continues where Digital Art/Video Production leaves off by providing students with a deeper understanding of the audio/video software used to create their films. Students critique their work using appropriate cinematic and art vocabulary.
Digital Media I, Grade 9-12
Students will learn to write, storyboard, act in, and edit videos both for the internet and the screen. Their art will be the visual story. This entry level course provides the foundational skills needed to enter the television production industry. The class provides an overview of the equipment, job responsibilities, and techniques involved in both traditional studio production and remote location work with an emphasis placed on the digital technology. Emphasis is placed on vocabulary and correct industry terms, camera operation, picture composition, script writing, lighting, remote shooting, directing, and the editing process. The foundations of acting, stage management, editing in programs such as Adobe Premiere, After Effect, or other editing software will be taught.
Digital Media II, Grade 9-12
Prerequisites: Teacher recommendation or Digital Media 1.
Students will learn to write, storyboard, act in, and edit videos both for the internet and the screen. Their art will be the visual story. Students will be given opportunities to create stories and videos for businesses and nonprofit organizations. This course provides the advanced skills needed to enter the television production industry. The class provides an in depth look at the equipment, job responsibilities, and techniques involved in both traditional studio production and remote location work with an emphasis placed on the digital technology. Emphasis is placed on vocabulary and correct industry terms, camera operation, picture composition, script writing, lighting, remote shooting, directing, and the editing process. This is an advanced class that builds on student’s prior knowledge of
acting, stage management, editing in programs such as Adobe Premiere, After Effect, or other editing software.
Film and Video Production, Grade 11-12
Prerequisites: Must be 16 years of age or older, or have junior standing.
This course trains students in concepts and principles used in film and video production. Skill development is achieved through organized school productions under the supervision of the instructor. Students learn the historical perspectives of film production and analyze American film and television from a variety of artistic approaches. The course exposes students to the basics of visual story telling through the creation of storyboards, script writing, basic shot types, camera movements, lighting, audio, and techniques of editing.
Broadcast Journalism (JBHS Only), Grade 10-12
Prerequisites: Teacher recommendation or Video Production 1.
This course will provide students with the skills and technical abilities to run a studio in a live news broadcast environment. Emphasis will be placed on communication skills, professionalism, responsibility, and teamwork. Students will learn to work equipment appropriately and produce a variety of video projects to air on the program.
